Varicose Vein Surgery

Before endovenous laser treatment “traditional” varicose vein surgery was the most frequently used intervention to treat varicose veins.  During varicose vein surgery, through a small incision in the groin, the saphenous vein is tied off and removed from another incision below the knee.  This is called the stripping procedure.  In addition, all varicosities are removed from small skin incisions (phlebectomy).

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

Compression bandages are applied at the end of the procedure. Patients are asked to wear compression stockings thereafter for a few weeks.

Patients experience mild discomfort following surgery.  Bruising at the stripping site in the thigh may be present for a few weeks.   Patients may resume their normal activities within two to three weeks after surgery.
