About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are veins that become dilated and twisted.  With pooling of blood in the legs they fail to properly circulate the blood back towards the heart.  The size of varicose veins, most commonly in the thigh and calf, varies between the large bulging symptomatic varicosities to the very small spider veins.

In severe cases varicose veins can rupture or form leg ulcers.  Some patients with varicose veins may have a history of blood clots in the deep or superficial veins.

Duplex ultrasound study helps to find the cause of varicosities and thereby choose the best treatment.  Other diagnostic tools may also be helpful e.g. venous reflux plethysmography studies.

A variety of non-surgical, minimally invasive and surgical treatments are available for treating varicose veins.
