Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is used to treat medium and large varicose veins.   In the past these veins were treated by surgery.

The relatively deep-seated dilated veins (e.g. saphenous veins) may not be seen in their entire length on the skin surface.  Therefore, they are first located with ultrasonography and the sclerosant injection into the vein is carried out at selected sites under ultrasound guidance.  This intervention takes a short time and is relatively painless.

Patients are asked to wear compression stockings immediately after the procedure to reduce bruising and keep the veins compressed.  A walk for half an hour immediately after the procedure is recommended, thereafter return to normal daily activities is encouraged.
